- Indian whiskies continued to dominate whiskiesof the world rankings, accounting for 14 out ofthe 26 whisky brands and five out of the leading six. theIndian whisky market had a size in excess of 100million 9-litre cases in 2008 which is around twice thatof all the other types of whisky combined,excluding Scotch. Indian whiskies dominated the top 10 positions ofthe fastest growing brands, in a category that sawdouble-digit growth in 2008 from an alreadyhigh base.

Indian whisky has been enjoying huge growth as economic prosperity encourages consumers to trade up from local unbranded spirits to branded whisky and other spirits.
- Whisky is a shortened form of usquebaugh, which English borrowed from Gaelic (Irish uisce beatha and Scottish uisge beatha). This compound descends from Old Irish uisce, "water", and bethad, "of life" and meaning literally "water of life". It meant the same thing as the Latin aqua vitae which had been applied to distilled drinks since early 14th century.
- The non-Scotch whisky market, chiefly comprising Irish, American, Canadian, Indian and Japanese whiskies, is one of the largest growth areas of the global wine and spirits industry. The performance of the three most international non-Scotch whisky categories - US, Canadian and Irish - has been more varied. Irish whiskey is currently the most rapidly rising of the three, accelerating at an impressive rate and rising by 8% CAGR between 2003 and 2008 to reach 4.46 million cases.
